Amid a standoff that has led to a government shutdown, MSNBC’s Hardball host Chris Matthews will be in Cambridge Thursday to talk about his new book and a time when the Democratic Speaker of the House compromised with a Republican president.

matthews.pngMatthews will speak at the Cambridge Public Library Thursday, Oct. 3, at 7 p.m. about his new book “Tip and the Gipper: When Politics Worked.”

The book is about Cambridge native and late Speaker of the House Thomas “Tip” O’Neill Jr. and his working relationship with late President Ronald Reagan from 1980 to 1986.
Matthews served as a top aide to O’Neill and visited the library last year when the city was commemorating the centennial of O'Neill's birth.

The event Thursday night will be held in the main library’s lecture hall at 449 Broadway and is being co-sponsored by Porter Square Books.

Matthews will also give a free reading at The Harvard Coop at noon Thursday.
