Buses will replace Red Line trains over the Longfellow Bridge this weekend and no vehicles other than MBTA buses will be allowed to travel the bridge.

The closures Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 26-27, are part of the state’s ongoing $255.5 million Longfellow Bridge rehabilitation project, and will also be in place the following weekend of Nov. 2-3, according to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation.

Buses will replace Red Line trains between the Kendall/MIT and Park Street stops and only MBTA buses will be allowed on the bridge. Vehicles seeking to cross the Charles River will be detoured to the Craigie Bridge.

The Longfellow Bridge will remain open to emergency vehicles and pedestrians. Bicyclists will be asked to walk their bikes on the sidewalk across the bridge to ensure the safety of others.

Saturday, Oct. 26, there will be alternating lane closures on the eastbound side of Memorial Drive to accommodate work above the roadway, according to the state.

The Cambridge-bound traffic has been detoured at the bridge since July, and that detour remains in place.
