A portion of Memorial Drive will close this weekend along with additional lane closures and parking restrictions for the 49th Head of the Charles Regatta.

The road and lane closures for the popular sporting event come ahead of a plan by the MBTA to replace trains service with buses on a portion of the Red Line between Boston and Cambridge next weekend, Oct. 26-27, because of the Longfellow Bridge project.

Races in the two-day rowing competition on the Charles River will be held from 8 a.m. to about 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 19-20.

Memorial Drive will be closed in Cambridge between Western Avenue and Fresh Pond Parkway from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, and again from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday night when the cleanup is concluded, according to the state Department of Conservation and Recreation.

Across the river in Boston, the right lane of Soldiers Field Road on the westbound side will be closed between Western Avenue to the North Harvard Street ramp Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The right lane of the westbound side of Soldiers Field Road will also be closed at the Herter lot from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Parking restrictions will be in place at the Soldiers Field Road lots 1-4 beginning at 10 p.m. Wednesday Oct. 16 through 8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20. Parking restrictions will also be in place for portions of the Westbound side of Memorial Drive on Saturday and Sunday and at the Cambridge Boat Club at Gerry’s Landing Road from 10 p.m. Wednesday to 8 p.m. Sunday.
