Carlos Omar Santiago, 35, of Stoughton was charged with armed assault to rob, assault and battery, and attempt to commit a crime.
Police received a call for a panic alarm at the gas station on 2776 Washington Street at 12:03 a.m. Friday, according to a statement from Canton Police released later that day.
When police arrived, they found a “visibly shaken” clerk who described a man who had entered the store with a gun and demanded money, the statement said.
The clerk told the man he had no access to the money and the assailant came around the counter with the gun. A struggle ensued, and the clerk was able to chase the suspect out of the store. No money was taken, according to the statement.
Officers found Santiago hours later and identified him with help from witnesses and the store’s video surveillance system. He was arraigned in Stoughton District Court Friday morning, the statement said.
The clerk sustained a minor injury in the struggle, according to the statement.
