The Gridley School, Cantonís town-run preschool, will not operate this coming school year.
The schoolís June 28 deadline came and went without a sufficient number of families signing up, officials said.
The school faced a major challenge when all four of its teachers resigned last spring for varying reasons, according to Recreation Director Janet Maguire.
At a June 18 meeting, selectmen discussed whether to continue the school, but only 12 families had sent in their $40 deposit, far below the 34-student minimum for the program to break even.
The deposit was increased to $400 after the meeting to impose more of a commitment on the participants' part, but no additional families signed up.
Another preschool, Canton Community Kindergarten Preschool, known as CCK, agreed to accept students who had signed up for the Gridley program.
Maguire said the future is uncertain for the Gridley School.
