Better traffic may be in store for Canton following selectmen negotiations with the owners of the new University Station development in Westwood.

Selectmen reached an agreement with Westwood Marketplace Holdings, LLC, the new owner of the University Station development in Westwood, on Friday.

The corporation agreed to reduce the size of the project from 4.5 million square feet to 2.1 million square feet, according to a statement from the Town of Canton. The primary entrance of the project will be located off of I-95 at Blue Hill Drive rather than near Dedham Street.

Canton will also receive roadway improvements at eight intersections in Canton valued at $1.37 million to address the effects of the project as well as a $1.35 million payment to further improve the roads.//////

Westwood Marketplace Holdings is also committed to supporting improvements to the Dedham Street area and will work to coordinate with ongoing Dedham Street area improvements, according to the statement.

Dedham Street improvements may be funded in part by the Metropolitan Planning Organization through the Transportation Improvement Program.

Those improvements consist of adding an off-ramp from I-95 North to Dedham Street, widening three bridges over the highway, the railroad tracks, and the Neponset River, and adding signals and sidewalks – a total of about $30 million worth of work.

Those improvements may begin as early as 2014, according to the town’s statement. Roadwork would take about two to three years to complete, the statement said.
