The Boston nonprofit Families United in Educational Leadership (FUEL), which provides financial incentives and educational resources to low-income families for their children’s college education, will host a unique family graduation at Bunker Hill Community College. FUEL is celebrating the 61 students and their families graduating from the FUEL program this year. Many of these students will be the first in their families to attend college when classes begin in the fall.
Graduating seniors and their families will all be honored for completing the college savings and financial education program and for earning college scholarships. The first-of-its-kind commencement, welcoming media, local officials and policymakers, will kick off with opening remarks by Charles Desmond, Massachusetts Department of Higher Education Chairman; Louise Packard, Executive Director of Trinity Education for Excellence Program (TEEP), will share some words on behalf of FUEL’s nine partner organizations. FUEL graduating senior Yoselyn Guzman will perform The National Anthem, as well. Yoselyn is an honor roll graduate who will attend Salem State University in the fall on full-tuition scholarship and hopes to become an author.
Salem State University associate vice president of enrollment management Scott James will also recognize the four students, including Yoselyn, who have been awarded FUEL Compact scholarships to Salem State. The recently-launched partnership with Salem State University offers five full-tuition scholarships to qualifying FUEL students.
FUEL’s graduating families, hailing from partner organizations including TEEP, La Vida and Boston Chinatown Neighborhood Center, saved a total of $89,400 for their children’s higher education. In addition to Salem State, students are also headed for Boston College, Boston University, Hamilton College, Holy Cross, University of Massachusetts Boston, Wesleyan and other prestigious institutions this fall.
The FUEL program is currently serving close to 350 low-income families and more than 400 students.
