The kickoff of a previous Emerson Hospital 5K for Cancer.

Emerson Hospital will hold its annual 5K Run-Walk for Cancer on June 4, starting at 10 a.m.at The Thoreau Club Field, 275 Forest Ridge Road, Concord, according to a release.

The event is sponsored by the Emerson Hospital Auxiliary, Marx Running, and The Thoreau Club. It will be co-chaired by Faith Pulis, chief executive officer of The Thoreau Club, and Mark Coddaire, president of Marx Running.

The day will include a barbeque from Firebox BBQ, as well as a timed, one-mile cross-country Kid's Fun Run for ages 5-12 and a Tot Trot for kids age five and under. There will also be a tie-dye T-shirt-making station, an inflatable obstacle course, volleyball, badminton, and recreational swimming.

The Thoreau Club is offering a “Get Race-Ready Package,” which includes pre-race clinics as well as race registration. The training clinics include running and walking drills, stretching, gait analysis, heart rate training, wellness, nutrition lectures, and more—all led by Thoreau Club and Marx Running staff. Team Thoreau registration and a complete schedule of clinics is available at the event's website.

All of the event's proceeds will benefit the Bethke Cancer Center at Emerson Hospital. By collaborating with Massachusetts General Hospital and Commonwealth Hematology-Oncology, the Center is dedicated to providing state-of-the-art technology to address the personal and physical needs of Emerson patients and their families. The Center is now in its fourteenth year of operation.

Funds raised from the Run-Walk allow the Bethke Cancer Center to continue to invest in technology, like a new linear accelerator, which delivers radiation with unsurpassed precision, hitting targets with minimal impact on healthy tissue.

“I know I speak for all of my clinical colleagues when I say how grateful we are to have this latest treatment tool right here in Concord,” said Dr. Jack McGrath, medical director of the Massachusetts General Radiation Oncology Department at Emerson Hospital.

Runner and walker registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. at The Thoreau Club Field with the starting musket volley by the Acton Minutemen. Refreshments and music, provided by R & R Productions, will await the race participants upon their return.

Registration for the event is $30 per person the day of the event. Advance registration for $25 is available until May 28 at the event's website. Children under 12 participate free. Free T-shirts are available the day of the race to the first 200 participants.
