Danvers Police arrested a Gloucester woman for allegedly shoplifting at Kohl's Department Store, according to a police official.

On Jan. 26, police responded to a call at the store on Independence Way that employees spotted two women shoplifting, said Sergeant Robert Bettencourt of the Danvers Police Department.

Welch, 40, and the other woman, 37, who had a 20-month-old child with her, allegedly hid about $400 worth of merchandise in the bottom of a stroller, Bettencourt said.

After purchasing a pair of socks, Bettencourt said, Kohl's loss prevention officials stopped the two women and held them until police arrived.

Welch, was arrested by responding officers while the other woman was summonsed to Salem District Court, according to Bettencourt.

Both suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
