RCN Telecom Services has announced it will give an automatic credit to customers who live in areas that experienced severe and widespread damage, including power outages, as a result of Tropical Storm Irene.

The broadband provider will distribute the automatic credit to an estimated 4,500 customers who will see the deduction in their next bill, the company said in a news release. Milton and Dedham are among the towns RCN serves.

“As members of the community also affected by Hurricane Irene, we know how challenging this event has been,’’ said Jeff Carlson, who is the company’s vice president and general manager. “At RCN we take reliability of our services very seriously and we regret any disruption our customers may have experienced.”

Carlson said the individual credit will reflect the number of days that the customer experienced disruption in service due to power outages. As of this week, the credit will begin appearing in customers’ bills.

“We are grateful for our customers’ loyalty and their patience as we worked on restoring their services,’’ he said. “This is our way of showing customer appreciation.”
