The National Friends of the Poor Walk, sponsored by the St. Vincent de Paul Society, takes place this Saturday in communities across the country.

In Dedham, the walk is being organized by two chapters of the Catholic lay group based at both St. Susanna’s Parish on Needham Street and St. Mary’s Parish on High Street.

Registration begins at 9 a.m. at St. Mary’s and walkers will start at the church and end at St. Susanna’s. Pledges are also accepted online at Walkers can also register online at http://www.svdpusa.net.

According to the society’s website, the event allows community members from all walks of life across the country to participate in a simultaneous, nationwide event to raise national awareness of the challenges faced by the nation’s poor and to raise money to be used in direct service to them.

Funds raised locally will be used locally for everything from food and clothing to fuel assistance and help with security deposits for homes.

For more information, call St. Mary’s at 781- 326-0550 or St. Susanna’s at 781-329-9575.
