The first phase of the $6.1 million Dedham Square Improvement Project is slated to begin April 6 at 7 a.m. in the Keystone parking lot. That day, no cars will be allowed in the lot, but it will be open Saturday and Sunday until 9 p.m., when night work begins.

When the lot is finished, it will include 17 additional spaces and serve as a parking area while work on the main streets is being done.

Officials hope the project will make pedestrian crossings safer, improve traffic flow through the square, increase parking spaces, and enhance the aesthetic appeal of the area.

Work this weekend will consist of removing the lot’s islands and then placing barriers to separate the rear of the area from the front. Night work is expected April 8 and April 9 starting at 10 p.m. All other working hours should be from 7 a.m to 5 p.m.

At a presentation last month, director of engineering Jason Mammone presented a brief overview of the project and reminded attendees that the schedule was bound to change.

"As always, the way you see it here isn't always exactly how it goes," he said.

The department will be updating the project website, Twitter page, Facebook, e-mail list, YouTube account, and Flickr with construction information during the next few months as work begins.

For questions or concerns, contact Mammone at 781-751-9350 or e-mail jmammone@dedham-ma.gov.
