The Town of Dedham was recently notified that it was one of seven communities awarded a Municipal ArtistLink planning grant from the state of Massachusetts.

The grants were awarded to cities and towns that demonstrated a commitment to advancing and integrating artist spaces into community-wide economic development plans, a news release from the state said.

In Dedham, the $20,000 will be used toward the planning of the Mother Brook Arts & Community Center at the old Avery Elementary School.

Selectman Paul Reynolds said the grants are a chance for towns to partner with arts and cultural groups, and this was the financial push needed to get the center rolling.

“The good news is that the Town of Dedham has already been very supportive of arts and culture,” Reynolds said. “This financial assistance will allow us to accelerate those efforts.”

In addition to the money, the grant provides technical help to artists, community-based nonprofits, municipalities, and real estate developers that create and maintain artist work spaces and studios.

The following towns received the grants: Barnstable, Dedham Fitchburg, Holyoke, Lynn, Pittsfield, and Taunton.
