At 5 this morning, construction crews along Route 128 began opening a portion of the newly constructed fourth travel lane between Randolph and Westwood.

The opening was the first of three planned for this week and included the section of I-93 North between I-95 near Exit 1 in Canton and Route 24 at Exit 4 in Randolph.

Dubbed the “Add-a-Lane” project, the construction is part of a $53.7 million effort to widen a 5.5-mile stretch of the interstate between Randolph and Westwood, a news release from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation said. It began in the summer of 2008 and is slated for completion in early spring of next year.

On Wednesday, orange road signs warned drivers of the lane shift just after Exit 2A in Canton. Traffic in the area flowed smoothly during the noon hour.

Because of the new fourth lane, use of the breakdown lane for travel during weekday commute hours will be discontinued in the segments as they open.

On Thursday, the second section of the project, 1-95 South between University Avenue at Exit 13 and I-93 North at Exit 12 in Canton will open at 5 a.m.

The final section will open Friday between a point just south of Route 109 near Exit 16 and University Avenue at Exit 13.
