The National Hockey League lockout has ended, but Dedham firefighters have their own hockey game to focus on.

They will be facing off against former Boston Bruins on Feb. 1 to raise money for the firefighters association.

“If they tried, they could beat us 25 to nothing, but they go easy on us,” said Dedham Fire Lieutenant William Walsh on Monday.

Beyond going to support Dedham community causes, firefighters are looking forward to the event for a chance to skate against their heroes. This is the third consecutive year the Dedham firefighters have held this event.

Last year, the event drew such a large crowd it was standing room only at the Boch Ice Arena, Walsh said.

Firefighter Michael Grealy is one of the department’s members who has taken to the ice during past events.

“You see the names and faces you watched on TV,” Grealy said Monday. “Meeting them in person is kind of surreal.”

Grealy recalls seeing John McKenzie and Lyndon Byers, and was impressed to see Dedham Fire Lieutenant Robert LoConte face off against one of the Bruins goalies.

“They were the greatest thing I ever saw and here I am on the ice with them, sweating with them,” Grealy said.

The Dedham Firefighters Association makes donations to Little League, Pop Warner and other local organizations, according to Walsh.

The event will take place on Friday, Feb. 1, at 6 p.m. at the Boch Ice Arena, 1105 East St., Dedham. For tickets or more information, call the Dedham Fire Department at 781- 751-9400.
