Dedham police issued a statement Friday reminding residents of a MedReturn Box located at the police station at 600 High St.

The MedReturn Box allows individuals to safely dispose of unwanted prescription and over the counter drugs.

Since the department began housing the MedReturn Box in 2011, it has collected more than 250 pounds of such drugs.

Drugs from landfills and flushed down toilets are being detected in groundwater, according to the release. Using the MedReturn Box will allow the drugs to be safely disposed of.

The statement further says that more than half of first-time opiate users get drugs from medicine cabinets of family or friends.

Needles should not be disposed of in the MedReturn Box.
