Former Dedham policeman Joshua Blaney traded his blue uniform and gun for a fire helmet and hose.

Town Clerk Paul Munchbach swore in Blaney as the newest member of the Dedham Fire Department at a selectmen meeting on Thursday.

Blaney’s father, Sheldon, who had just retired after 33 years in the Dedham Fire Department, was at the ceremony and pinned his son with the Fire Department badge. Blaney’s wife, Joanna, and two young sons, Alex and Connor, were also at the event.

Graduating in the top 5 percent of his Massachusetts Fire Academy class of 70, Blaney had a final score of 93 percent, according to Dedham Acting Fire Chief William Spillane.

“Not too bad,” Spillane said.

Blaney spoke little at the event, instead listening to selectmen as they offered congratulations.

“Our hope is that, like your dad, you retire and you have a long and healthy career in Dedham,” selectman James MacDonald said at the event.
