Now beyond fetching the paper, canines are encouraging reading in new ways at the Dedham Public Library.

Children have the opportunity to schedule one-on-one time with a “Tail Waggin’ Tutor” at the library. The tutors are trained therapy dogs that allow budding readers to practice their reading skills in a supportive atmosphere.

Children are encouraged to read aloud while sitting with and petting the dog.

“We are so pleased to be able to offer this program to our young patrons,” Endicott Branch Librarian Danielle Conklin said. “Reading aloud builds confidence and being in the presence of a friendly pet can be very therapeutic. It’s a great combination.”

Tail Waggin’ Tutors will be available at the Endicott Branch Library on Tuesday evenings and at the Main Library on Wednesday evenings. Parents are invited to schedule a session for their children by calling the library at 781-751-9179.
