The men of Boston were out in Dorchester last night to not only serve up delicious entrees but also to fight for women’s health.
The Men of Boston Cook for Women’s Health, an event held since 1995, gathers residents, nonprofit organizers and local celebrities in Codman Square to donate and work to benefit the Codman Square Health Center.
There were sliders, wine, and music. But most of all, it was a chance for people to get together to have a little fun and raise money for a worthy cause.
“This is my second year at the event,'' said John King, CNN anchor, Dorchester native and celebrity chef for the night. "I grew up less than a mile from here. It’s a part of my neighborhood and it’s great to come back and help out.”
Along with the celebrity chefs who were there to serve up prime rib to guests, the crowd was full of local politicians and community activists putting politics aside for a great cause.
“To be out here and supporting the health center is natural for me. It’s a good day in Dorchester,” said state Representative Carlos Henriquez, who represents the 5th Suffolk District.
Along with the food and the politicians, local residents were also out to not only rub elbows with some of Boston’s most powerful but to get out share stories and some friends.
“This is so much fun. I’m having a great time plus there is nothing more important than giving back to the community,” said Karen Kindle, executive vice president of Cambridge Savings Bank.
This year, the goal of the event was to raise money for new facilities to house a digital mammography machine.
“One hundred dollars of every ticket that was sold went directly to supporting women’s health programs, such as funding the cost of a mammogram, sponsoring prenatal women’s groups or supporting our innovative healthy weight initiatives for women, including the Fruit & Veggie Rx Program,” according to the Men of Boston Cooks for Women’s Health Website.
