Senator Jack Hart, who represents Dorchester, South Boston, Mattapan and a portion of Hyde Park, was named assistant majority leader for the state Senate on Tuesday.

"I am honored to be afforded this opportunity by Senate President [Therese] Murray, a woman and a leader whom I admire greatly," Hart, a South Boston Democrat, said in a statement. "In this position, I hope to work with the leadership and the members to continue to do good things for the people of the Commonwealth."

The position was made available through the departure of Senator Steven Tolman.
