Codman Academy receives $10,000 donation from BU MBA students
Students from Boston University's School of Management recently donated $10,000 to the Codman Academy Charter Public School in Dorchester.
“We know they got a lot of applications for the money so we feel honored that they decided to choose us,” said Meg Campbell, executive director of the academy. “This money will help us continue our programs and will help us disseminate information to other schools.”
The group of students from BU that donated the money was taking part in an experiential philanthropy project, which received the funds from the Highland Street Foundation. The group of five students reviewed 28 applications to determine who the recipient of the donation would be and where it would make the largest impact.
“The Codman Academy was one of our last visits,” said Camille Szramiak, one of the BU students. “When we walked in [to the Codman Academy] we just knew.”
The money, which was donated to the school in December, will be used to support a variety of Codman programs, including the publishing of a “healthy” cookbook created by students.
The school, started in 2001, serves students in grades 9-12 with the mission to “prepare students for full participation in the intellectual, economic and civic life of society by ensuring their full preparation for and access to further education, by developing the skills and vision to undertake a rewarding career and the motivation and character needed to engage deeply and productively in community life.”
Along with a unique approach to healthy living, the school also has a partnership with the Codman Square Health Center which provides classroom space and program assistance.
