Golfers can rejoice with the announcement Thursday that Boston’s two public golf courses are expected to open two-weeks ahead of schedule. Both the William J. Devine Golf Course at Franklin Park in Dorchester and the George Wright Golf Course in Hyde Park will be officially open to golfers March 17.

“Welcome back to the City of Boston’s two municipal courses,” Mayor Menino, who has played at both courses, said in a statement. “As long as the weather stays clear we can expect to open two weeks earlier than usual, so we encourage golfers to get out there and enjoy it!”

The courses have undergone improvements over the past year.

The George Wright course, founded in 1938 and recognized by Boston Magazine in 2011 as the “Best Public Golf Course”, saw improvements to its 3rd, 6th, 12th and 16th holes. The 16th hole received a new cart path along with a new bunker and expanded rough area around the green. The 3rd and 12th holes saw renovations to their bunkers and the 6th hole also received two new bunkers.

The William J. Devine course, the second oldest public golf course in the nation and named three-years in a row by Golf Digest as one of its “Best Places to Play”, saw renovations to its fairway and rough area on the 16th hole, along with new tees on the 4th, 7th and 15th holes.

While the William J. Devine course has had nine of its holes open during the winter, the course will have all 18 of its holes in full operation March 17.

Both courses, which saw more than 30,000 golfers each last year, are owned and operated by the city and include full pro shops, concession stands, cart rentals and lessons for all ages and abilities.

The courses are open from dawn to dusk, seven days a week and more information about rates and membership can be found on the city’s website or through the courses’ Twitter handles @FranklinParkGC and @GeorgeWrightGC
