The Dorchester/Roxbury Little League celebrated its 53rd season Sunday night in style, with burgers, hot dogs -- and of course baseball.

The league that draws hundreds of youths, ages 4-17 from Mattapan, Dorchester, and Roxbury, handed out trophies and named its MVPs, celebrating a league that calls Dorchester’s Harambee Field home.

“Baseball is truly a team sport and we are really trying to get these kids to work together,” said John Gordon, president of the league. “That’s [teamwork] key in a neighborhood like this because if you can get them to play together, you can get them to live together.”

Demari Rogers, 5, and Ajani Gordon, 6, were named this year’s T-Ball MVPs and Hakeem Hardy, 13, and Terrin Wallace, 13, who play in the Majors, were named the MVPs for their division; each received a trophy recognizing their hard work.

The Baltimore Black Sox, Memphis Red Sox, Toledo Cubs and Pittsburg Crawfords were also awarded trophies for finishing out the whole season.

The league will be back in 2013 for its 54th season and for more information about the league or how to get involved, click here.
