Dorchester Community Food Co-op receives financial boost from national program

The Dorchester Community Food Co-op, the host of the successful Winter Farmers’ Market in Codman Square, recently received a financial boost of $10,000.
The grant, provided by the Food Co-op Initiative, a national non-profit working to support community co-ops, also comes with technical assistance and mentoring provided by the organization.
“We’re honored to be recognized for our collective work—it’s neighbors and residents who’ve brought us this far,” Jenny Silverman, a member of the Dorchester Community Food Co-op said in a statement. “The co-op will bring what this neighborhood is calling for: economic opportunity, healthy affordable food access, and education around healthy food choices.”
The co-op was just one of ten groups in the nation that was awarded the money.
“This is a game-changer,” Molly Shaw, a nutritionist at Upham’s Corner Health Center a partner with the co-op said in a statement. “Residents of Dorchester often lack access to healthy food. Working across the cultural spectrum of our community, and with small businesses and exiting community efforts, the co-op will change the nutritional landscape of Boston and especially Dorchester.”
Along with the Winter Farmers’ Market, the co-op is also a supporter of the Fresh Fridays café series in the Bowdoin/Geneva neighborhood and is currently in the process of developing and opening a full-service grocery store in the community.
“Count on a vibrant, thriving tomorrow,” Joel Wool, a member of GreenDorchester a partnering organization, said in a statement. “We’re seeding an environment of health, happiness and community power.”
