Dorchester area residents have been raising concerns via social media about a vandal sneaking around Malibu Beach and cutting down trees along the boardwalk.

Although the vandal hasn’t been caught, and according to the Department of Conservation and Recreation there aren’t any leads, the department says the trees will be replaced.

The vandalism started in late August when on the Savin Hill Facebook Group, residents frantically posted pictures of trees hacked down in their prime. Comments from members ranged from sadness to frustration, with many wondering why someone would do something like this.

The two trees, located along the Malibu Beach Boardwalk towards the Morrissey Boulevard side of the park, appeared to be cut down with a hatchet leaving just small stumps with cut marks.

The tops that were chopped off have since been removed but there is now a gap where trees once stood, providing shade for park goers and picnickers.

A report has been filed with the Massachusetts State Police and the DCR said the trees will be replaced in the spring, but until then there is a gap along the boardwalk where trees once stood bringing a little green to Savin Hill.
