The Dorchester Arts Collaborative is within reach of having its own function space, but before the organization moves into its new home it needs to raise funds to complete the installation of a kitchen.

The total cost of the new kitchen is $5,500 and the group is currently rallying supporters online to raise the money for the center that will allow the group to host shows, hold classes and display local art.

“There is not one local art center where people can go in the neighborhood,” said Andrea Kunst, chair of the Dorchester Arts Collaborative Board. “We have people who want to teach classes and be able to exhibit the work of local artists and this is a really exciting opportunity.”

The Erick Jean Center for the Arts is a 1,200 square-foot space at 157 Washington St., a new development project by the Codman Square Neighborhood Development Corporation.

Named after Erick Jean, a community activist and artists who passed away in 2010, a permanent tribute to the lawyer will also be installed at the center.

The D.A.C. is currently in the process of signing the lease on the space and the new kitchen will give the group the ability to hold functions and gallery openings with food and beverages, something that is not possible with the space’s current amenities.

The group however is within reach of its fundraising goal, it needs just over $300, but it must have all the money by Oct. 6.

Those interested in contributing to the center or finding out more about the project can visit the center’s fundraising page by clicking here.
