The Epiphany School in Dorchester has forged an international connection.
The middle school, a private tuition-free school for urban youths, hosted the Kliptown Gumboot Dance Group on Friday. The group works to promote awareness of the Kliptown Youth Program in South Africa.
Students talked with the dancers, also students from Kliptown, about their experiences abroad and lead them on a tour of their school.
“I really enjoyed watching them step, especially in their rain boots. Watching them step made me realize that anyone can step,” Wendy Laracuente, an eight-grader at the Epiphany said in a statement. “They mentioned that it only took them one week to learn the steps they performed, and I found that to be incredibly amazing.”
The school says it already is working on plans to have students visit South Africa and work with the program, which works to “eradicate the poverty of mind, body, and soul.”
