Dorchester's Flat Black Coffee named one of the best on the East Coast

Dorchester’s own Flat Black Coffee recently took third place in the America’s Best Espresso Competition New York.

Organized by the Washington state based trade promoter Coffee Fest, the competition brought together the best from the East Coast and eastern Canada in search of the tastiest espresso in North America.

Separate competitions are also held for the western and central states.

David House, the owner of Flat Black and a Dorchester resident, said it was an honor to receive the award after a number of rounds of judging and taste tests.

“This is definitely a good break for us,” said House, 46, who moved to the neighborhood in 1998.

Flat Black was created out of House’s own disappointment with the coffee offerings in Boston.

“I’ve always been a coffee snob,” said the Maine native.

House, who was working in the hotel industry at the time, opened his first Flat Black at 1170 Washington St. ten-years ago this March and has since opened three more in the city.

Slow roasting beans from all over the world at the Lower Mills shop, House said it’s his quality products and attention to detail that separate his beans from the rest of the pack.

“If they’re [farmers] growing good coffee we’re bringing it in,” said Kraft who estimated he has beans from more than 18 countries on hand. “We’re already dealing with the best and we’re trying to make it better with the roasting.”

Using slow roast techniques and working closely with farmers, House and his 23 employees have managed to bring to Dorchester and Boston, as Flat Black Coffee’s website describes, “the unadulterated, alluring aromas, luscious bodies and tantalizing tastes of single origin, shade grown, individual estate coffees.”
