Results from the second-annual MathRocks competition

The second-annual MathRocks competition brought mathletes from across the city together for a day of putting their mathematical skills to the test.

Hosted by the Boston Teachers Union and the Boston Public Schools, close to 55 BPS schools took part in the four levels of competition at the event held April 30 in Dorchester.

“The students from every corner of Boston competed and the bright future of the Boston Public Schools was clearly on display with how well they performed,” Richard Stutman, president of the teachers union, said in a statement.

In the fourth- and fifth-grade team category West Roxbury’s Joyce Kilmer K-8 School took first place, followed by Charlestown’s Warren Prescott K-8 School in second, and Brighton’s Winship Elementary School in third.

In the fourth- and fifth-grade individual category it was Giancarlo Erazo from East Boston’s Bradley Elementary School and David Choi from Jamaica Plain’s Curley K-8 who took first place.

In the sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-grade team category it was West Roxbury’s Joyce Kilmer K-8 School that again took first place, followed by Hyde Park’s Roosevelt Middle School in second, Dorchester’s Boston Latin Academy in third, Brighton’s Edison K-8 School in fourth, and finally a tie between Charlestown’s Warren Prescott K-8 School and Dorchester’s Murphy School for fifth.

In the individual category for the sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-grade it was Crystal Sun from Charlestown’s Warren Prescott K-8 School, Thuy Le from Dorchester’s Murphy School, and Zachary Bogle from Brighton’s Mary Lyon K-8 School who took first place.

In the ninth- and 10-grade team category Dorchester’s Boston Latin Academy took home first place, followed by Brighton’s Another Course to College in second, Brighton High School in third, South Boston’s Green Academy in fourth, and Dorchester’s Burke High School in fifth.

In the ninth- and 10-grade individual category it was Juan Paniagua from Dorchester’s Boston Latin Academy who took first place.

Finally in the 11th- and 12th-grade team category it was again Dorchester’s Boston Latin Academy that took first place, followed by Dorchester’s Burke High School in second, Brighton High School in third, Dorchester’s Community Academy of Science and Health in fourth, and Brighton’s Another Course to College in fifth.

In the 11th- and 12th-grade individual category it was Jiahua Zhang from Dorchester’s Boston Latin Academy who took first place, followed by Likang Zhang from the Boston Latin Academy in second, Zhenhua Zhao from the Bosotn Latin Academy in third, Ryan Jean-Louis from Brighton High School in fourth, and a tie between Boston Latin Academy’s Nam Pham and the Burke High School’s Tyreik Silva for fifth.
