Boston Mayor Thomas Menino is putting Paul Revere’s status as a patriot on the line as the New England Patriots prepare to battle the Denver Broncos Saturday.

Menino and Denver Mayor Michael Hancock have agreed to swap local delicacies and jerseys as part of a friendly wager on the AFC Divisional Playoff matchup.

If the Patriots win, Hancock will wear a #12 Tom Brady jersey at a public event and treat Menino to a Colorado steak dinner.

But if the Patriots lose, Boston will dress its oldest patriot, Paul Revere, as a Bronco, donning the Paul Revere statue in the North End with a blue and orange #15 Tim Tebow jersey for a day. Menino would also treat Hancock to a New England lobster dinner.

Earlier in the day, Menino considered offering a sample of local beer to his Denver counterpart.

“We have the best. I mean, you know, Colorado beer? It hasn’t even made it east yet. Sam Adams has made it to the west and Harpoon has made it out there, but Colorado Rocky beer? Uck,” Menino said.

(Not so fast, says the Globe's 99 Beers blog, pointing out that Colorado can more than hold its own, ale-wise.)

But Menino -- who is a teetotaler -- was confident he wouldn’t have to give away any Boston brews, saying Denver’s game is about as weak as its beer.

“We have Tom Brady who is true and has a veteran’s technique of how to get through these difficult games,” said Menino, complimenting the team as a whole.

Playful sports bets among mayors is an old tradition.

On Tuesday, Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl made good on a wager with Hancock: He "Tebowed" while clad in the quarterback's jersey after the Steelers fell to the Broncos in the first round of the playoffs. Menino briefly considered "Tebowing," but said, "I do that every Sunday in church."

This afternoon, a Denver Post blog offered a retort by Colorado's governor.

“Tom Menino is one of the great mayors in America,” said Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper, a former brewery owner. “Obviously he hasn’t had enough time to learn about Colorado beer.”
