Dorchester man stabbed inside State Street T station in stable condition

A 22-year-old Dorchester man stabbed inside the State Street MBTA subway station Sunday night is in stable condition at Massachusetts General Hospital, according to Transit Police.

The man was stabbed once when an altercation between three people escalated inside the mezzanine level of the downtown station that serves the T's Blue and Orange lines, Transit Police Deputy Chief Lewis Best said Monday.

No suspects have been identified, he said. Authorities continue to investigate, including by reviewing surveillance video from the area.

The stabbing was reported to Transit Police at about 9:10 p.m., Best said.

On Sunday night, Paul Butler, 35, of Melrose, said he and a friend, who asked not to be identified, were walking past the entrance to the station when they saw a man bleeding from his neck. The man was holding a bloody shirt to his throat, said Butler.

Butler and his friend, both Marine veterans, said they stayed with the man and were able to calm him until emergency response officials arrived. They said they were also able to calm a friend of the wounded man who was there.

Boston Police said Sunday night that the man's injuries were life threatening.

On Monday, a Boston Police spokeswoman said the injuries to a woman who was wounded in a separate stabbing in Boston on Sunday night are now considered non-life threatening.
