I-93 southbound from Somerville to Boston to close overnight
A three-and-a-half mile stretch of Interstate 93 southbound, from Somerville to downtown Boston, will be closed from midnight tonight until 5 a.m. on Wednesday so maintenance work can be done, state transportation officials announced.
Traffic will be steered off I-93 at the Route 38 / Mystic Ave. exit and then detoured via surface streets before being allowed to re-enter the highway near South Station, officials said in a press release.
Vehicles destined for the Massachusetts Turnpike westbound will access Interstate 90 westbound via an on-ramp just south of Kneeland Street, the release said.
State Police and Boston Police will begin setting up for the closure tonight at 11 p.m.
The state plans to completely close a similar stretch of I-93 northbound on Tuesday, Jan. 15 at 11 p.m. before reopening the highway at 5 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 16, officials said.
The twice-monthly closures, which were implemented last year and suspended during the recent holiday season, allow maintenance crews to clean surfaces, inspect electrical and communication systems and conduct general maintenance along the highway’s lower deck, the Zakim Bridge and the Thomas P. O'Neill Jr. Tunnel.
