No love, just a frosty reception for the MBTA

Storified by Jeremy C. Fox· Fri, Feb 15 2013 12:14:54

Love was in the air this week, but not much of it was directed at the MBTA. After a 46.5-hour shutdown caused by the blizzard that struck New England last Friday and Saturday, the system returned to life on Sunday with some of the torpor you might expect of a person who'd been put out of commission by the storm. As days passed, it gradually became its usual self again -- crowded, late, and full of strange odors and malfunctioning equipment.

Still, the T's absence made some hearts grow fonder, as people realized just how much harder it is to get around without their regular bus or train. As evidence of that affection, take a look at the week's biggest #MBTAbrag -- this widely retweeted message that service was returning:
Red Line, Orange Line to resume at 2 pm today. #MBTAbrag Here are the details: - http://bo.st/XyKB78Dorchester News
Kyle even expressed his gratitude to the T:
Just took the T from Brookline Village to Kenmore. Thanks for working hard and getting it back up and running @mbtaGM. #mbtabrag #MBTAKyle MacDonald
But not everyone was feeling so grateful. Even before service resumed, many locals were feeling annoyed by the MBTA, though some complaints appeared to be tongue-in-cheek.
I've been waiting over an hour for a train, this is ridiculous! #mbtaannoy http://pic.twitter.com/8iQ1tm8PArthur Liu
.@TDGarden so close Saturday night for some, but so far with unsafe roads and #MBTAannoy #Nemo2013 #Safety1st http://pic.twitter.com/zXbrd40oBruins SupahFans
Tomorrow MOS Open, Children's Museum Closed, my #MBTA rant #MBTAannoy http://wp.me/p2Cg5w-esCambridgeKidsCalendr
@mbtaGM Since you guys are shut down for 9% of February, can I get 9% of my $228 monthly pass refunded? Seems only fair. #mbta #mbtaannoyHeckles DaFool
but its been 24 hours since the storm ended. #openthet #itsjustsnow #mbtaannoy #mbta #mbtasucksSean Smith
@BostonTweet stuck in Brighton! #mbtaannoyAmanda Gaughan
Still, some folks were having fun
Hi Ho, Hi Ho! It's off to work I go! I don't need #MBTAbrag. 3 miles to Fenway. Lots of sledders & snowball fights. http://pic.twitter.com/mb5VlF08CoachKevinAKrueger
As commuters returned to work on Monday morning, a couple of them had positive things to tweet about the experience:
Good train mngmnt, good communication @ North Station this morn #mbtabragMeridith
Funny enough, ride on green line was ideal today! 3 min wait for train, 9 min ride #mbtabrag (walking TO the T was a diff story)Arthur Liu
But most were not so lucky:
Slow service doesn't even begin to describe it. Happy Monday after the blizzard! #MBTAannoyRed Line Commuter
Maybe the #mbta should plow out their garages so cars can actually park there. #mbtaannoySean Fahey
Cannot believe that orange line inbound is only running every ten minutes. How does this even make sense? #mbtaannoyMichelle
@mbtaGM glad to see empty orange line outbound trains are able to run every 3 mins while packed inbound trains run every 10. #mbtaannoyMichelle
@mbtaGM #MBTAannoy C line a biggest disaster today. No trains, no room to get in. I hate the green line!!!KNR
.@mbtaGM I waited for service to resume from the earlier fiasco and now there are more delays. Unbelievable! #MBTAannoySabrinaTheWiseLatina
@sobos82 I missed all my overtime cause of the #mbta #mbtaannoyBryan Berube
The "still not yet there" continuing playlist. #mbtaannoy http://instagr.am/p/VmGaAzHxqA/Tommy Von
And the Monday afternoon rush hour was no better.
More delays! Another 2 hour commute. FML! #MBTAannoyRed Line Commuter
Good idea, green line- send 1 out of every 10 trains to north station at 5pm. No1 wants to go home anyway. #mbtaannoyErin Shepherd
. @mbtaGM It's a mob scene at the Harvard station. #MBTAannoy http://pic.twitter.com/s0H4eMWPSabrinaTheWiseLatina
@mbtaGM Nice to see Red Line back to normal dangerously crowded erratic trains running in packs #mbta #mbtaannoyrev8056
. @mbtaGM Is being late the new normal for the red line? #mbta #MBTAannoySabrinaTheWiseLatina
As the week went on, life slowly returned to normal. More or less. Residents dug themselves out of the snow. Schools re-opened and children returned. The MBTA resumed its regular schedule.

And as usual, it had some trouble adhering to that schedule.
@mbta what happened to the 62 to Bedford VA? I'm going to be an hour late to work. #mbtaannoyJoe Briney
@mbta What happened to the 62 to Bedford VA? My husband has been waiting for an hour! Major fail #mbtaannoy @BostonDotComJennifer Briney
@mbta 62 to Bedford VA just picked up my husband; he waited exactly 1.5 hours. You owe @JABriney an apology. #mbtaannoy @BostonDotComJennifer Briney
Been waiting for the 86 in Brighton center for 35 minutes. #mbtaannoyDaniel E. Pritchard
How can I be on time when I get to Copley and the bus doesn't come for 24 minutes?!? #mbtafail #Boston #mbtaannoyLyssa Goldberg
And the red line is late again. #WTF #MBTAannoy #mbta @mbtaGMSabrinaTheWiseLatina
I hate buses #mbta #mbtaannoy #BOSnowHeide Penner
One B train in the last 40 min during morning rush hour. Nice going mbta. #mbtaannoyErzhik
I love waiting 20 minutes for the t and then having a half empty b line train drive by without stopping. #mbtaannoy #allstonBrittany Ryan
100+ people were just waiting at Packards corner for the T or the 57 for 20+ mins. Took 3 diff trains to fit everyone finally #mbtaannoycarly
As usual one no #1 bus for 14 mins and another in 15. Back to back? Why is this so hard? #mbtaannoyD. Matt Brothers
There are supposedly 4 buses at this stop that go to Kenmore. Haven't seen a single one for 20 mins #mbtaannoyDave
Ok...they skipped the 7.50am bus. Now the 5.35 is nowhere to be found. Useless and without a sense of responsibility as always. #mbtaannoyAnthony C.
Taking the T to work 1 its running 10 mins late train has no room yet is making all the stops #mbtAannoyRahul A. Garg
#mbtaannoy I've been waiting for this train for 3 minutes... For the past 5 minutes.Jules Wang
#1 bus 2132 just blew by mass ave and beacon without stopping while not full. Criminal. #mbtaannoyD. Matt Brothers
Waited at Fenway for an outbound D while 4 inbound trains passed. Two outbounds were too full to get on; 3rd time a charm (?). #mbtaannoygehenna thrace
The green lines appear to be slower than molasses this evening. No T Alert, #mbta? #mbtaannoyS. Bennett
Amanda made it clear she had run out of patience:
@mbtaGM your grace period is over! Get to Comm Ave and clean it up! #mbtaannoy #forrealz #mbtaannoyAmanda Gaughan
But Brandon saw the bright side of his overcrowded bus:
55+ people on this inbound 71 means we can just fly by all the suckers waiting at remaining stops! #mbtabragBrandon Constant
And Lynne got a kick out of some impatient commuters:
Platform 10 deep at North Station, full train pulls up, people think they all can get on. Watch and laugh. Next train empty. #MBTAbragLynne Brown
Red Line Commuter was shocked by at least one pleasant trip this week:
Wow! Everything is on time this morning! #mbtabrag #mbtaheavenRed Line Commuter
While Jess had two commutes he could #MBTAbrag about:
I must admit, today was one of the best days on the "T" Evethigng was actually on time... Can you believe it?? #MBTABRAGJess Indeed
Friday commute is going soooooo smooth. Shocking right?? #MBTABRAGJess Indeed
But for all those folks enjoying their rides, there were almost as many complaints about some part of the system that was broken or malfunctioning. Even Brandon, who so enjoyed flying by his fellow commuters while taking the bus on Tuesday, wasn't so happy with what he found in his train on Monday:
Ugh, broken door on outbound red line train at Charles/MGH. #mbtaannoyBrandon Constant
Just rode the red line from Harvard to Central and sweat off 4 pounds. #mbtaannoyMatt Regan
I love when the green line train randomly loses electricity. #reliable #mbtaannoyJackJohn Logan
Things break. Equipment malfunctions. To some degree, those things are unavoidable. But humans mostly have control over their own behavior, though you might not know it from the people you ride to work with:
Please lower your voice nobody cares what kind of Chinese food you ordered during the blizzard. #MBTAannoyRed Line Commuter
Really, there's no need to dj for the entire train with your phone #mbtaannoy #orangelineCaitlin Jordan
As long as your bag is comfortable, it's all good. #mbtaannoy http://twitpic.com/c3cvogErzhik
Rush hour on green line doesn't mean you can dance around with your backpack in my face. #mbtaannoyErzhik
Pax on Orange line claiming he's. "in predator mode" and is knocking stick against seat. This can't end well. #MBTAannoy #mbtascaryJustin D.
Why do people on the T gotta talk so loud #MBTAAnnoyJess Indeed
And there are so many of them:
Nothing like being on a dangerously packed train with a disturbed person Always great commute on Red Line #mbta #mbtaannoyrev8056
I'd rather cut off a limb than be on this packed bus... #mbtaannoyTony M
Some riders were clearly getting into the spirit of Valentine's Day:
This makeout session happening right in front of me is totally unacceptable #mbtaannoyCassandra Aviles
Stop making gross wink faces at me on the T. It's too early for that. Also I can see your wedding ring. #mbtaannoy #ewMarissa Breton
Love that @mbtaGM Orange Line driver who gave all the "lovely ladies" a happy valentines day shout-out this AM. #MBTAbragCarolyn Peters
But the Transit Police were getting no love at the Davis Square T station, as seen in this widely re-tweeted message:
#PoliceState at Davis Sq. @defendthe4th #4thAmendment #NoWarrant #mbtaannoy @anoninmass http://pic.twitter.com/nrTzyyToDefend the 4th
And Marc had little affection for the drivers he encountered:
I swear, bus drivers get worse the farther into the suburbs you get. #mbtaannoyMarc Filippino
But Ellie appreciated some humor from the conductor on her train:
Loving my orange line announcer this AM- thanks for making me smile! @mbtaGM #mbtabragEllie Rounds
Thank you, Ellie, for making your fellow commuters smile with that tweet. Most days, the MBTA is nobody's valentine, so when it does something that makes you love it just a little bit, why not tweet using #MBTAbrag? And for those other nine commutes out of 10 (or 19 out of 20, or 99 of 100), don't forget to use #MBTAannoy. A really clever or interesting tweet could lead to meeting Mr. or Ms. Right.
