Windsor Button going out of business after 77 years downtown

A downtown business that has provided buttons and much more to Boston for nearly 80 years will soon close its doors.

Windsor Button, the Temple Place store that offers yarn and buttons, sewing and needlework products, and other textile products will begin its going-out-of-business sale Monday, Feb. 11.

Owner Susan Baker said Thursday the store lost its lease when the landlord decided to renovate the building at 35 Temple Place.

Windsor Button first opened in 1936.

Baker, who has owned the store for 15 years, said the store’s closing will be difficult for many customers.

“It’s touched a lot of people because it’s been here so long, and really there isn’t anything else like us,” she said, noting that customers from around the world say how lucky Boston is to have the shop and its variety of quality products.

Baker said there are currently no plans to open in a different location.

“We did look for other spaces, but we are priced out of the Boston market. It’s just too expensive,” she said.

Baker plans to continue the sale until all merchandise is sold.
