St Patricks Day at Broadway T stop.jpg

Jeremy C. Fox for Boston.com

The Broadway T stop was a slow-moving sea of green hats, clothing, accessories, and vomit on Sunday.

What happens on the MBTA rarely stays on the MBTA

Storified by Jeremy C. Fox· Fri, Mar 22 2013 15:07:44

If you had a lazy Sunday at home last weekend, or spent your time in church or in quiet activities with family and friends, you missed a very special day on the MBTA, one that featured a lot of stumbling, a little bit of vomit, and more green than than the human mind can comprehend.

Boston takes St. Patrick's Day seriously, and fortunately, a lot of celebrants are thoughtful enough to take the T rather than drinking their green beer and driving. But that means some serious crowds on the Red Line, especially in and around Broadway and Andrew stations on Sunday, when all of South Boston becomes a sea of emerald revelry.

Predictably, some folks didn't wait until Sunday, as Caitlin's tweet from Saturday afternoon demonstrates:
Why are people already throwing up? Seriously people, look at your life. You've made bad choices. And no you can't sit next to me #mbtaannoyCaitlin
Surprisingly, there were few other #MBTAannoy tweets about the oft-inebriated crowds, perhaps because those willing to board the Red Line on Sunday were themselves members of those crowds. Except for Jules and Brandon:
So, I assume we're hitting off this patty of #mbtaannoy with the #StPatricks riders? Cause I'm getting a mob of them here, right now.Jules Wang
DTX SB platform to Southie is a mess of drunken green. #mbtaannoyBrandon Constant
It's possible, though not necessarily true, that the holiday crowds had something to do with Catherine's frustration Saturday night, and Elise's on Sunday afternoon:
Stuck on the Green Line ride from Hell. This is why I live in Cambridge. #mbtaannoyCatherine Cloutier
Seriously get me out of Boston forever. #breakingpoint #mbtaannoy #patsfailElise
Of course, it doesn't have to be St. Patrick's Day for the Green Line to be unpleasant, as McKenzie and Ali remind us all:
Now I remember why I moved out of Allston: the B line. #mbtaannoyMcKenzie Lawton
When I see another green line train pull up while mine is standing by...bit.ly/YuxEKQ #thembtaruinedmylife #mbta #mbtaannoyAli Wisch
And one's fellow passengers don't need a holiday to be inconsiderate, as numerous tweets demonstrated:
The #redline is packed and dude next to me is huffing & puffing that I sat next to him #MBTAannoy #SorryI'mNotSorryRachel Heaton (Ryan)
The world’s most pampered tote bag gets its own seat during Monday rush hour. Bless. #MBTAannoy pic.twitter.com/AfWDTDhQ4bMelinda
Woman sitting next to me kept nudging me and saying "excuse me" so she could get off. CAN WE WAIT FOR THE BUS TO STOP PLEASE?! #MBTAannoyKyle W. Kerr
You squeezed your large bulk into seat how about you support your own weight when train accelerates #mbtaannoy #mbtarev8056
The guy next to me on the train smells like he slept in a ashtray last night. #mbtaannoyKristen
Instead of kids I get stuck next to a lady with a smelly #Subway sub! #MBTAannoy #nasty #stinkysubs pic.twitter.com/R9jArPcryqRed Line Commuter
While your song is super beautiful, and I didn't know people could whistle SO loud... Please SHUT UP on the rush hour train. #MBTAannoyRachel Heaton (Ryan)
People who hock loogies on subway platforms are gross. I feel like I need to wear a hazmat suit just to go to work. Eww! #MBTAannoyDawne Thorne
S/o to the bruins fan that flipped out on me for grazing him on the green line with my backpack..You just cursed your team #MBTAannoyIan V
No one else wants to sit your luggage deserves 2 seats of its own #mbta #mbtaannoy pic.twitter.com/gUtGZw3qw1rev8056
Lady I have lost feeling in my left arm you are really TOO big for that seat #mbtaannoyrev8056
Dipping on the #mbta into an open container. Gross. #mbtaannoy pic.twitter.com/nHP4t6ktgoLuke Sutherland
Redline train car full of preteen boys - a stinky, spazzy melée #mbtaannoyAndrea Still Gray
@mbtaGM @MBTATransitPD I just passed teens on the subway platform at Green Street passing a blunt around, if you're interested. #MBTAannoyJeremy C. Fox
Of course I walk on the Blue line train that has puke all over the seats. #MBTAannoyIan V
Maybe Ian's tweet was composed on St. Patrick's Day but didn't send for five days? It's more pleasant to believe that than to face the fact that people sometimes vomit on the train on a weekday morning. Maybe there's a stomach bug going around.

Like vomit, overcrowding can happen on a train at any time:
"Please clear the doors, there is more service behind us." Yeah, I think we've all learned now that the next train is full TOO. #MBTAANNOYDoug Horne
@ mbtaGM We would stay off of the door if we weren't packed like animals trapped underground #mbta #mbtaannoyrev8056
Evening on Dread Line Don't know where we are so many people packed in & waiting can't see outside #mbta #mbtaannoyrev8056
And it's not just one's fellow passengers who create frustration; some bus drivers are pretty inconsiderate, too:
Thanks #mbta bus driver. Sure, be late, sit on warm bus 5 min &make waiting passengers stand in cold at #backbaystation ugh major #mbtaannoyJennifer Mikoll
This week, though, that driver was in the minority, as five tweeters had only nice things to say about conductors and drivers:
Thank you conductor. I hope you have a 5 star day today too. #mbtabragMBTA Rider
Tonight's #MBTA Green Line E train conductor was great! Clear announcements, friendly, and excited voice. Need more like him. #MBTAbragLeft Coast Owl
Thanks Mr. 34 Bus driver for waiting for me as I ran to catch you! You made my morning!! #mbtabragEllie Rounds
Operator 66129 did the right thing and waited for the lady running to catch the bus instead of driving off at Western Ave #MBTABrag #86busFrederica Bimmel
Classy conductor just thanked us for moving in, why your welcome food sir :-) #mbta #Boston #mbtabragSarah Ace
And a few riders were pretty cool, too:
Someone on this train smells fantastic. #firsttimeforeverything #MBTAbragMelinda
Dude I see on my train every day is what I imagine Jack Reacher looks like. #notTomCruise #MBTABragSara F.
I applaud the courage of anyone who would wear these pants on the #OrangeLine. #MBTAbrag pic.twitter.com/0zbkTlEHRNJeremy C. Fox
The weather this week, though, went beyond cool. Wednesday was the first official day of spring, but it felt more like January, as these riders can attest:
#mbtaannoy pic.twitter.com/Qo7RaKK6LqMichael J. Nichols
Yuck. Hope you have boots. And gloves. And a hat. And hot coffee. And nothing to do. #snow RT @nicholsmj: #mbtaannoy pic.twitter.com/IsvNdIc9zFRob B Wu
@mbtagm wouldn't be a frigid morning waiting outside at Salem station if the commuter rail wasn't running at least 10 mins late. #mbtaannoyMichelle
@mbtagm is the 725 express from Salem to North Station just not coming? Another freezing morning and the train is late 15 mins. #mbtaannoyMichelle
But even this unseasonal weather had a bright side for Arthur:
Nothing like snow to shave 10 min off my commute, #mbtabrag somehow?Arthur Liu
And if the snow didn't help Katie's commute, at least it didn't hurt it:
#mbtabrag the 55 bus has left on time every day even in all of these snowstorms. #golfclaps @universalhubkk.
She was lucky to be on a bus that managed to stick to its schedule this week, because it seems few other MBTA vehicles did:
Wow trains backed up southbound from S Station to Davis Too bad the T only runs trains in 1 direction @ a time #mbtaannoy #mbtarev8056
Why have there been 3 #43 buses and no #15 buses in the last 20 minutes?! #MBTAannoyB Money Babyy
Red Line way to start the week a disabled train ahead. Everyone really wanted to be late for work anyway #mbta #mbtaannoyrev8056
.@mbtaGM The red line is late. I'm going to be late to work again! #mbta #mbtaannoySabrinaTheWiseLatina
That awkward moment when it takes twenty minutes to get from H to Broadway... #MBTAannoyTony M
Good old #MBTA "rush hour" service. Taxes, death, and red line delays. #mbtaannoy pic.twitter.com/z7P9SpngI7William Holbrook
That's bus #3 to pass without stopping. Will we make it a record 4 today? We'll see! #imfreezing #MBTAannoyKyle W. Kerr
This train was standing by at Andrew & now at Broadway. 1st was due to traffic & now they r announcing a disabled train. @mbtaGM #mbtaannoySabrinaTheWiseLatina
I'm going to start billing the #mbta every time I'm late for work due to disabled trains. $$$ @mbtagm #mbtaannoySabrinaTheWiseLatina
Red line standing by. Glad I'm on this one. Next one isn't coming for 20+ min. #mbtaannoySweetadelinevt
Stuck at Back Bay b/c signal probs. After announcing trains that never came PA said she has no idea and to take a seat. #mbtaannoyMike McCurdy
grrrrrrreeeeaaaaaat #mbtaannoy pic.twitter.com/Pqf23Xi4KLDianne
Sitting on the bus for 10 mins, was supposed to leave 8 mins ago. Bus driver says, "I don't know when I am supposed to leave" #mbtaannoy WTFJohn Griffin
Lestchka probably would have been happy if her Commuter Rail train had only been delayed:
My Beverly train= xnld. Didn't find out 'til arriving at N Station. Way to go with those email alerts. SO MUCH FAIL! #MBTAannoyLesetchka
While A.P. would have liked to see the bus leave a little bit later:
The 5:30 outbound 426 left at 5:28... glad I sprinted for nothing. #mbtaannoy @mbtagmA.P. Blake
Jennifer's bus took its time, but she was looking on the bright side:
@Mahima_B at Copley, still a slow ride but the bus is warm! #mbtaannoyJennifer Mikoll
Most of the tweeters above were very specific in their complaints -- and occasional compliments -- but Melinda expressed a more general malaise:
Hateful. #MBTAinOneWord #MBTAannoyMelinda
This is what it must feel like to be held hostage. #OrangeLine #MBTAannoyMelinda
While the MBTA was making Melinda unhappy, it was giving Jessica, Mike, and Kyle something to #MBTAbrag about:
EXPRESS TRAIN!!! Yes!!!! #mbtabragJessica Chahanovich
Surprisingly smooth commute into downtown from Davis this morning. Only snag was an out-of-service car. But no delays! #mbtabragMike Tremblay
The only good thing about a pack of buses coming your way is that, usually, one is half empty. #stretchingout #MBTAbrag (?)Kyle W. Kerr
Don't forget to follow their example. When the MBTA treats you good, give it some love with a little #MBTAbrag. And when it seems determined to bring you down, let your fellow riders know using #MBTAannoy.
