MBTA riders ask why must commutes be so unpleasant

Storified by Jeremy C. Fox· Fri, May 10 2013 13:19:46

As another week draws to a close, many local commuters breathe a sigh of relief. They will pass two days without stepping onto an MBTA bus or train.

This week, Melinda, an Orange Line rider who regularly uses the #MBTAannoy hashtag to express her frustrations, asked a question many before her have pondered:
Oh subway commute, why must you be so constantly hateful? #MBTAannoyMelinda
Her commute had no comment.

This time of year, students and others are preparing to move out of Boston, for the summer or for a lifetime, and some are counting down the days:
Two days in a row the D line commute is messed up... 21 days til I won't have to deal anymore!! #mbta #mbtaannoyMichelle Manseau
Why do they dread public transportation so much? Maybe Bryan can explain:
Get me off the T now .. People are wildToday #mbtaannoyBryan Berube
It's true. Today, yesterday, every day there are people on the T behaving in ways that drive their fellow passengers nuts:
Chomping on gum does not make it taste any better! #mbtaannoyIn and Around Town
Long train ride 2day thanks 2 hipsters doing poetry reading....way to ruin a usually lovely journey.#mbtaannoyKathleen Veronica D
Every time I take the #39 into the city I always get stared down by the other people on the bus. #gingerproblems #mbtaannoySonia Rose
So annoying when people stay by the door blocking the way in & out.. Move in! #mbta #mbtaannoyKNR
Several people intentionally ignoring the standing pregnant lady. Their parents would be proud. #MBTAannoy twitpic.com/cp4vbfKyle W. Kerr
If you don't have headphones with you, maybe you should just wait until you get home to listen to your music. #MBTAannoyJeremy C. Fox
Hey, Typhoid Mary, try covering your mouth when you cough. #MBTAannoyMelinda
At least Token Angry Guy on the 66 made things interesting this morning by ranting in English AND Spanish. #brightside #mbtaannoyElise
rush hour train. hummer sized stroller. enough said. #mbtaannoyMBTA Rider
Creepy man staring at me on the t, no I do not want to get a beer with you sometime #mbtaannoy #uncomfortableNatalie Leveille
Yes, those are empty sunflower seed shells. Disgusting on SO MANY levels. #MBTAannoy #peoplearenasty twitpic.com/cpghpzKyle W. Kerr
Ya'll know the Red Sox game is PROBABLY going to be canceled due to rain, right? (In Clint Eastwood voice) Get off my train! #MBTAannoyKyle W. Kerr
You do know there is a back door you walked right past, instead of having to make your way through everyone to the front, right? #MBTAannoyklouf
Missed train by 10 seconds b/c family of 4 decided to let 2 y.o. "lead them" to train. Dude. No one thinks this is cute. #MBTAannoys.w.p.
At least some of those passengers appreciate the classics:
Youre right dude on the #mbta #redline, we all want to listen to 2pac Dear Mama at 830am. Youre very kind to play it for the car. #mbtaannoyD
Also on todays #redline playlist: Eminem Guilty Conscience. Seriously, what year is it? #mbtaannoyD
And then there are the romantics:
The green line at morning rush is one of the least sexy places ever but that didnt deter a couple from making out half the trip. #mbtaannoygehenna thrace
Others are notable mainly for their personal style:
Chick on my bus wearing Star Wars tights. I'm not even a fan but that's awesome... #MBTAbrag twitpic.com/cpdgxmKyle W. Kerr
This next sighting, while not especially pleasant, is a kind of classic. Everyone knows this happens on the train, but rarely do you see it in person:
Nail Salon on the T? Nope... Just and old dude clippin' his nails. #Gross #MBTAAnnoyRachel Heaton (Ryan)
While other riders were frustrating each other, erod was frustrated with herself:
I must have been absent the day everyone learned how to read a map. #nosenseofdirection #mbtaannoyerod
For many commuters, though, the problem wasn't the people they encountered but the long waits they faced:
Don't you just love when your bus is really delayed? #mbtaannoySonia Rose
Took me an hour and a half to get from #northstation to #beaconsfield stations today. #mbtaannoySonia Rose
@mbtaGM missed my commuter train because the 5 minute trip from downtown crossing to north station took nearly 15. Service fail. #mbtaannoyMichelle
B train came in 20 minutes late and decides to standby for schedule adjustment. There is a schedule on the green line? #mbtaannoyErzhik
Isn't it rush hour? Been waiting 20 mins for an outbound B train #dumb #mbtaannoyAmanda Gaughan
30 mins #mbtaannoyAmanda Gaughan
The red line is at it again: late during rush hour. @mbtaGM #mbta #mbtaannoySabrinaWiseLatina™
It’s getting to the point where I could run faster than the #OrangeLine. And I haven’t run since 1982. #MBTAannoyMelinda
We’ve gone four stations in 20 minutes. #OrangeLine #MBTAannoyMelinda
Some delays are more creative than others, as Rhiannon shows:
Why is this train stopping every 100 ft for 10 minutes?!?!? #mbtaannoy #mbtaRhiannon Gorham
The waiting becomes even more frustrating when it seems that your train or bus is taking far longer than its peers:
Three Ds in a row?! What is going on today?! #mbtaannoy @mbtaGMSammy Gorin
Wow there have even like 10 north bound green line trains n no south bound train #mbtaannoyBostonRailFan
Or when it is randomly and inexplicably smaller than usual:
Rush hour. Green Line. B train. Single cars. Why? #MBTAannoy @mbtaGM Still waiting for a train with space.Lisa
Really, @mbtaGM? One car going to Park St. at morning rush hour? Does that seem like a smart decision to you? #MBTAannoy #getyouracttogetherKyle W. Kerr
Or stiflingly warm:
But for real, why is the heat on on this bus? #mbtaannoySonia Rose
Even the riders badly frustrated with their usual trains, though, are even more #MBTAannoyed when those trains are replaced with shuttle buses:
Hooray! Shuttles on the rest of the #BlueLine means sitting at Airport for 10 minutes. #mbta #MBTAannoy #lateforworkChristopher
Some riders know that even when your train reaches its destination, that doesn't mean your journey has ended:
File under: Things I can't stand. When I have to walk the entire length of the train to find an open door. Can I board or not?! #mbtaannoyVanessa Marie
But Andrea and Mike found out this week that at least there are new ways to kill time when the Red Line is running slowly:
Service on the Red Line??? Can I get an Amen? #MBTAbragAndrea Still Gray
Wait, I'm on the red line between Central and Harvard and.... I have cell service??!? @amessina17 #mbtabragMike Tremblay
But what was Mabel to do when her conductor went missing?
The T operator got off and hasn't come back #trappedatheathstreet #mbtaannoymabel
Teesh and Jared had problems with conductors that apparently just didn't want to give them a ride:
I KNoW that E saw me runnin for it. U just didn't wanna wait. #mbtaannoyTeesh
Is it D Line policy to wait on the tracks but immediately close all doors and pull away if anyone tries to get on the trolley? #MBTAannoyJared Stander
While rev8056 was having difficulty with his conductor's announcements:
Love PAs on this decrepit Red Line train Announcements go from ear shattering volume to feedback #mbtaannoy #mbtarev8056
At least one conductor won praise from Sonia Rose for his announcement Thursday afternoon:
Orange line driver just called someone out for being dumb while trying to get into the train #mbtabragSonia Rose
And Dawne was impressed by the dulcet tones of the T's new general manager:
Just heard GM Beverly Scott's voice for the first time at North Station. @mbtaGM has such a nice, calming voice #MBTABragDawne Thorne
Bob Danger had a variety of experiences with his bus drivers this week, though apparently none of them were too impressive:
Run of 57 drivers this week has ranged from grumpy to rude to outright dangerous. Keep up the sub-par customer service @mbtagm #mbtaannoyBob Danger
Poor Kyle found himself on a train that had just a wee bit of an issue:
Our train is A LITTLE disabled? What does that even mean? #sittinginthedark #MBTAannoy @universalhubKyle W. Kerr
Maybe Kyle's train just had a wire problem?
I feel like the #mbta should elaborate more about what a "wire problem" is when the #greenline goes down. #mbtaannoySonia Rose
That would make more sense than what he heard on a bus last Sunday:
Passengers were just kicked off 57 bus just before Kenmore, told bus would not fit? What's going on there? #MBTAannoy @universalhubKyle W. Kerr
T-Aholic found that the subway could be downright hazardous:
@mbtagm My right leg hit a pedal of an unattended lift truck on Park St. platform at 6:15pm today. Bruise! #mbtaannoy pic.twitter.com/CsyGa7TcCET-Aholic
@mbtagm Machine was unattended; no sign around. Platform was crowded; people could get hurt when walking next to it! Negligence! #mbtaannoyT-Aholic
@mbtaGM I've submitted a written complaint, and will submit another one today. I request your immediate removal of safety hazard. #mbtaannoyT-Aholic
But in the end the MBTA stepped up and resolved the problem:
Green Line chief Mr. Ted Timmons called me to apologize this afternoon, and @mbtaGM Dr. Scott replied to my email tonight. #mbtabragT-Aholic
@mbtaGM Park St. Station wheelchair truck has been placed in a safe position. #mbtabrag pic.twitter.com/0JAXq6SFQyT-Aholic
That probably wasn't much consolation to Sonia Rose, though, or to her children:
I hate being late to things and its even worse when its to pick your kids up from school. #mbtaannoySonia Rose
Erzhik suggested a solution to the T's chronic money woes. Sort of:
30 min and still no B train. Plz go bankrupt @mbtaGM so you can be privatized. #mbtaannoyThis is an embarrassment to Boston.Erzhik
And Sammy spoke for many who really just want to go homeee:
The T door is stuck on the platform at North Station and this train is filled with people who just want to go homeee #mbtaannoy @mbtaGMSammy Gorin
The next time you're stuck on a train or a bus that is keeping you from your loved ones and your comfy couch, be sure to tweet using #MBTAannoy so your fellow riders can empathize with your plight. And when your conductor tells a passenger to stop being a jerk or Beverly Scott sings you a lullaby, don't be too shy to #MBTAbrag.
