Democrat Josh S. Cutler of Duxbury will replace Daniel K. Webster as representative in the House’s Sixth Plymouth District.

Cutler defeated Republican Karen Barry of Duxbury to become will be the first Democrat to ever represent the district.

“Tonight we’re going to celebrate as Democrats,” said Cutler, who gathered with supporters at Oliveira’s (cq) restaurant in Pembroke to celebrate his win. "But tomorrow we’re going to cast aside our parties ways and get back to the idea that I ran to be representative for all the people."

The district covers Pembroke, Hanson and part of Duxbury..

Webster, a five-term Republican incumbent, withdrew as the Republican nominee in September amid allegations by state bar investigators that he intentionally misused client funds in his practice as an attorney.

Cutler ran a campaign focused on issues including preventing cuts to education and green energy.

“I think I worked hard, and I ran a positive race, and I think people responded to that, and they respected that,” Cutler said.

Barry said she wasn’t deterred by her defeat.

“I trust that [Cutler] wants to do a good job,” said Barry, whose father once represented the district. “Although we differ philosophically on the role of government, the people have spoken. I’ll continue to stay involved and find a way to serve.
