An East Boston man was arrested early yesterday morning after allegedly shooting another man in the leg and leading Boston police on a car chase through the Sumner Tunnel.

Boston Police were called to 234 Maverick St. in East Boston just after 4:30 a.m. Saturday morning where they found one victim suffering from a non-life threatening gunshot wound to the leg.

The suspect, Richard Nunez, 40, was observed fleeing the scene by car in a Toyota 4Runner towards the tunnel entrance. Officers finally blocked Nunez's car as it exited Storrow Drive at Government Center.

There, officers ordered the suspect out of the car and removed a loaded semi-automatic firearm from his waist.

Nunez was arrested and faces charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, as well as charges relating to firearm possession and motor vehicle infractions resulting from the chase.

Nunez is scheduled to appear in East Boston District Court today, according to Boston Police spokesman David Estrada.

The gunshot victim, who remains unidentified, was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital.
