Harbor City School Director Carissa Hanagriff posed with the preschool’s first students.

After a period of delays while awaiting city approvals, the cooperative Harbor City School has opened on Putnam Street in East Boston.

The nonprofit preschool, which serves children age 2 years and 9 months up to 5 years, offers full-day and half-day options and can serve up to 20 children at any one time. It began its first full week of services on Sept. 12.

In a earlier interview, the school’s director, Carissa Hanagriff, said the preschool was born out of a desire from local parents to keep their young children in East Boston while exposing them to a quality educational experience. She lauded the support the broader community had given the preschool during its startup period.

“I’m really blown away by the way this community has come together to get us to the point that we are,” she said.
