An East Boston man has been charged with three unarmed robberies on the MBTA and is suspected of two others, after allegedly being caught in a robbery attempt on March 18.
Angel Ernesto Carpio, 22, was arrested by MBTA Transit Police after allegedly snatching an iPhone from a victim exiting a train at Haymarket Station around 7:15 p.m. in the March 18 incident. Carpio was booked and released, but was arrested again on a warrant issued when he failed to appear at Boston Municipal Court the next day.
Transit Police detectives conducted an investigation and interview with Carpio after the warrant arrest and subsequently charged him with two additional unarmed robberies of people exiting trains: stealing a cell phone at Wellington Station around 2:15 p.m. on March 9 and another phone at Sullivan station on March 19.
The detectives are also seeking criminal complaints against Carpio for unarmed robberies of a backpack containing a laptop computer at Airport Station on Dec. 2, 2011, and of an iPhone at Community College Station on March 20.
Carpio is being held at Nashua Street Jail on $2,000 cash bail and a detainer from US Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
