East Boston Main Streets has announced that it will hold its 12th Annual Countdown to Kindergarten Parade on the first Friday in September.

Every child entering kindergarten is invited to attend and will receive school supplies and a new backpack, as well as participating in a festive day celebrating the beginning of their elementary school experience. The parade will begin in Central Square at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 7, and move along Meridian Street as the children receive school supplies.

The parade will be led by marshals Ivonne Cano, Amir DelaCruz, Gloria Contreras, and Gladys Betencour. At the parade’s end, DJ John Dudley will play music while the children enjoy food donated by local merchants and individuals as well as face-painting and special programs offered by the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department, Boston Public Library, and others.

The parade is sponsored by Countdown to Kindergarten Boston, East Boston Main Streets, Boston Main Streets, the East Boston Social Center, the East Boston branch of the YMCA, Little Folks Community Daycare, East Boston Head Start, the Boston Police Department, and the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority.
