BRA approves East Boston hotel and retail project, expansion of Brooke Charter School

The Boston Redevelopment Authority announced Friday the unanimous approval of two significant East Boston development projects that could bring as many as 300 construction jobs to the neighborhood.

The projects include a hotel complex that would include restaurant and retail space, to be built on six vacant acres at the corner of the William F. McClellan Highway and Boardman Street, and the renovation and expansion of the former Dom Savio High School for use by the Edward W. Brooke Charter School.

The Orient Heights hotel project will be built in two phases. First, a five-story, 102,525-square-foot hotel with 177 guest rooms will be built, followed by two restaurant and retail buildings of 6,270 square feet and 4,035 square feet, both facing Boardman Street. The project will add 346 parking spaces, new sidewalks, planters, and street trees.

The project is expected to create 200 construction jobs, 69 permanent jobs, and 80 part-time jobs.

The developers will contribute $100,972 to the neighborhood housing trust and $20,143 to the neighborhood jobs trust, as well as $25,000 each for the Martin Pino Community Center, Noyes Park, and the East Boston Greenway.

At the former Dom Savio High School at the corner of Byron and Bennington streets, the Edward W. Brook Charter School will renovate the existing structure and add a three-story, 13,100-square-foot addition on the current site of the school’s parking lot and two adjacent multi-family homes at 617 and 619 Bennington Street.

This will be the third Boston location for the Brooke Charter School and will include space for 475 students. Construction is expected to begin in May and to be completed in time for a July 2014 opening.

The work will create 75 to 100 construction jobs, officials estimate.
