A Winthrop man charged with possessing and circulating child pornography was ordered on Thursday to be held on $3,000 bail, surrender his passport and stay away from children under 18, authorities said.

William A. Krott III, 30, was arraigned in East Boston District Court for five counts of possessing child pornography and one count of disseminating the illicit material, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office.

Prosecutors allege that Krott displayed an image of “graphic child pornography” during an online chat in November.

A monitoring system run by the chat host automatically captured a still image of the chat. The image was forwarded to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children’s CyberTip program and relayed to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office.

Prosecutors there used an administrative subpoena to obtain the internet protocol address from where the image had been displayed, officials said. That IP address was traced back to a device on a computer network within a three-unit apartment building on Quincy Avenue in Winthrop.

On Wednesday, State Police assigned to the district attorney’s office along with detectives from police departments in Winthrop and Revere interviewed each resident in the building, including Krott, authorities said.

They asked him if they could perform a brief search of his computers, officials said. He agreed and a short time later the investigators found a computer folder containing at least five images of children in “sexualized contexts.”

Confronted with the images, Krott allegedly indicated to the detectives that he had downloaded child pornography onto the computer and was arrested, according to prosectuors.

Krott, a manager at the popular Tavern in the Square bar and restaurant in Allston, is scheduled to return to court on March 22, district attorney office spokesman Jake Wark said.

Under state law, child pornography possession carries a sentence of up to five years in state prison; distributing child pornography carries a sentence of up to 20 years in state prison, authorities said.
