Boston Public Library officials have announced the opening date for the long-awaited new $17.25-million branch library in East Boston.

The 15,000-square-foot branch library now under construction at the northern edge of Bremen Street Park will open to the public at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2, according to a statement the library released Thursday.

The collections of the neighborhood’s two existing, smaller branch libraries will move to the new facility and be combined with thousands of items the library system has bought specifically for the new location, the statement said.

In preparation for the opening of the new branch, the existing branch libraries will close in September and October. The final day for the Orient Heights Branch will be Friday, Sept. 6, and the Meridian Street branch will close on Friday, Oct. 4.

Throughout October, library staff will work to prepare the new facility for the Nov. 2 opening. Library officials encourage East Boston residents to use other branches around the city during October. An interactive map of branch libraries is here.
