Professors, students, and other members of the Massachusetts College of Art and Design community paraded through the Fenway in a festive and colorful pageant last week to officially welcome the school’s 11th president to her post last week.

Dawn Oxenaar Barrett was inaugurated as MassArt’s president Thursday, succeeding Kay Sloan, the school’s first female president, who retired after 15 years.

The inaugural celebration saw hundreds of college and community members dressed in vibrant costumes and dancing to live music by students in the Colleges of the Fenway Performing Arts in Evans Way Park.

Barrett was most recently served the dean of architecture and design at the Rhode Island School of Design for a decade and is a graphic designer by trade. She has also served as head of the department of design at the Jan van Eyck Akademie in the Netherlands.

She will also oversee the college’s expansion along Huntington Avenue, which includes a recently completed 20-story dormitory and several renovations, and its $140 million fund-raising campaign.

Barrett lives in Boston with her husband, R.D.E. "Ootje" Oxenaar, and their daughters, Emily and Emma.
