A Natick man has been charged with attacking a public defender in Framingham District Court Thursday while he was awaiting arraignment on attempted rape charges from a previous case.

The Middlesex District Attorney’s office said Jeffrey J. Burke, 57, allegedly attacked a the public defender at the courthouse and was charged by Framingham police with assault and battery, disorderly conduct, disturbing the peace, and resisting arrest.

Framingham police provided no information on the arrest.

Burke was awaiting arraignment after being arrested Wednesday by Natick police at the MetroWest Medical Center for indecent assault with the intent to commit rape and assault and battery. The incident occurred at 4:30 a.m., and police were notified later in the morning, said Natick police Lt. Brian Grassey.

Grassey declined to provide additional details about the circumstances or victim, but said that Burke lives on Oakridge Ave.

At his arraignment Thursday on charges from both cases, Burke was ordered by a judge to be detained for a dangerousness hearing on Tuesday, said Grassey.
