Framingham State University announced this week that they will hire Eric P. Gustafson as the executive director of development and alumni relations, starting Feb. 6.

Gustafson will oversee all of the university's fundraising events and alumni activities.

"Eric has the experience, knowledge, attitude, and motivation to be successful in leading FSU's fundraising efforts," Framingham State President Timothy Flanagan said in a prepared statement. "We're excited to have him on board."

The position was vacated by Christopher Hendry, former vice president of advancement, who recently accepted a similar position at Fitchburg State University, according to Framingham State spokesperson Dan Magazu.

The change in title is due to the university shifting a few offices around to better streamline procedures, Magazu said.

While Hendry reported directly to Flanagan, Gustafson will report to Executive Vice President Dale Hamel. There is no longer a vice president of advancement position.

The position was vacant for two to three months, Magazu said, while the university searched for a replacement.

"We are confident he will help us increase alumni engagement and grow our donor base," Magazu said in an email.

Gustafson comes to Framingham State from Anna Maria College, in Paxton, where he had been serving as the director of advancement since 2008. At Anna Maria, he successfully increased alumni engagement in the college and rebuilt the advancement program from the ground up, according to a statement released by Framingham State.

Prior to joining Anna Maria, Gustafson served as the director of the Annual Fund at Muskingum College in Ohio.

Gustafson holds a bachelor's degree in political science from Marietta College, a master's degree in political science from the University of Massachusetts/Amherst and a master's degree in Criminal Justice from Anna Maria College.

Gustafson is currently president of the Central Massachusetts Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals. He also sits on the board of directors for the Rainbow Child Development Center in Worcester, and the board of governors for the Greendale Family YMCA, also in Worcester.
