CannaMed, a physician's office specializing in medical marijuana evaluations, will open a practice on Concord Street in Framingham in mid-December.

A physician's office specializing in writing patient recommendations for medical marijuana use will open a location in Framingham next month, company representatives said.

CannaMed, a California-based company, will open its medical marijuana evaluation center on Dec. 15 at 945 Concord St. in Framingham, said Renee Nunez, a company spokeswoman.

The office will charge $199 per year for each patient whom they recommend for medical marijuana use.based on a medical evaluation of the patient's condition. The office will also handle all paperwork to the state's public health department, Nunez said.

"The law just passed, and there’s a need for physicians," Nunez said, noting that many primary care physicians are apprehensive about recommending medical marijuana use. "We have Massachusetts-licensed physicians, and we're physician-owned, so we're just trying to help out with the need for people who want an alternative."

Nunez said the company also plans to continue expanding in Massachusetts, with their sights set on Boston for 2013, although Nunez said there is no specific metro site yet.

"This is the first step - we want to see how the response is," she said.

The company, which was established in 2004, also has four offices in California, and one in Hawaii.

Earlier this week, executives from MedBox, a company that makes medical marijuana technology and software, said that they will open offices on Speen Street in Natick.

"The office will operate as a mock dispensary," said Dr. Bruce Bedrick, MedBox CEO, noting that he liked the Natick location due to its proximity to the Massachusetts Turnpike and Route 9. "I'm also here as a resource for people to ask questions."
