Framingham Town Hall and the area surrounding it were evacuated Thursday night after a hand grenade was discovered in the basement of a nearby building.

Owners of the Happy Swallow Pub on Waverly Street found the grenade in the basement of their bar and brought it to the Framingham Police Department around 9:30 p.m. Thursday night, said Framingham Police Lt. Ron Brandolini.

Framingham's town hall and other surrounding buildings were evacuated for an hour and a half while fire officials and Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad workers were called to the scene.

The bomb squad x-rayed the grenade on-scene and found that the explosives had been removed from the weapon, Brandolini said.

The incident is under investigation, Brandolini said.

Several town boards, committees and commissions had meetings scheduled in the town hall Thursday night, including the Board of Health, the Planning Board, the Human Relations Commission, and the Framingham Historical Commission.
