National Development has purchased the former Breyers ice cream plant at 490 Old Connecticut Path for $4.5 million, it was announced last week.
The plant, owned by multinational conglomerate Unilever, began making Sealtest ice cream in the 1960s, and later, Breyers. Operations at the plant shut down for good in 2011.
The property has been on and off the market since, according to National Development partner Edward Marsteiner. Six months ago, the 9.2 acre property went back on the market.
National Development will redevelop the site and is in the process of evaluating the best use for the facility. “It won’t be an ice cream plant,” said Marsteiner.
Construction would take between a year and 18 months.
“In the next two years, we hope to have a new facility permitted and built on that site.”
National Development will then sell or lease the property to another company.
